ALEXA’S TOP TEN GLOBAL WEBSITES 2011

Alexa is a very useful site for web masters as it enables you to discover information about other websites. You can use Alexa to find out how renowned a site is, who owns the site, to find new sites and a lot more. Whether you are a web professional trying to know what are the latest competition’s out there or just wish to play around with some SEO or Web tools, Alexa is the best site available. If you want to sort out the different websites all over the world based on their popularity or category then this site is the best tool for you!

PS: Alexa's  Traffic Rank are time dependent. The top ten sites below fluctuate a lot in ranking within a week. So the rankings below are in accordance with 26th May 2011.

Based on Alexa’s global rankings, following are the top ten sites of 2011:

1- GOOGLE

Google enables users to search information including webpages, images, videos et cetera. It offers numerous unique features and search technology. the site has been online for the last thirteen years, established in around 1998, and processes over one billion search requests and about twenty-four petabytes of user-generated data every day. Google is ranked #1 according to the three month Alexa traffic rankings. The top queries driving traffic to Google.com are wide ranging, starting from gmail which receives 7.80% of the total search traffic and provides over 7GB free storage along with fun applications such as Google chat and gmail mobile. This, followed by Google maps, Google translate, Google earth and other such useful tools makes Google the #1 website for the year 2011.

2- FACEBOOK

Now who doesn’t know about Facebook? From your nine year old cousin to your grandmother, everyone knows and loves Facebook. This social utility, established in 1997, connects people from all around the world, enabling them to keep up with their friends (old and new), friends of friends, and their friends too! :p That’s just how popular this site is (and down right addictive too)! You can upload and share photos easily, post on your friend’s walls, share videos and links and engage in so many fun games online! Not to mention update your status to let your friends know what you’re up to. That reminds me, I forgot to update my status today.. Oops! :p

3- YouTube - Broadcast yourself

Online since 2005, this site has made video sharing and uploading all over the world a matter of few seconds. Never before was watching and uploading videos such a convenience as it is now after YouTube, which acts as a global platform for distribution and sharing of information all over the world. Whether it’s that Chelsea game you missed last weekend or that old song you grew up listening to when you were young, it’s sure to be found on YouTube!

4- YAHOO!

Ranked 4th by Alexa’s three month traffic rankings, is a major internet portal providing search results, chat-rooms, free e-mail, groups, images and so much more! The site ranks #3 in U.S. while in Taiwan it beats all others, ranking as the #1 site of 2011. Established in January 2004, Yahoo has grown gradually and is still among the leading sites available online when it comes to email, chat, advertisements and searching information.

 

5- BLOGGER

Blogger is the fifth most popular site in the world based on Alexa’s global traffic rankings. Compared with other sites, this site appeals to users who browse from home and school. The site was owned by Google Inc. in 2003 from Pyra Labs. This site lets its users have their own voice on the web. Anyone can make their blog and share their thoughts with the rest of the world. The site also helps amateur journalists and writers to express their views and interact with people who read their work. With Google Blogger you can also control who can read and post to your blog. It’s all in your hands! You can also find other bloggers online who share your interest and connect with them, expanding your own information. This blog i.e MBT, that you are reading at the moment is served by Blogger. It’s really as easy as it sounds. :)

6. BAIDU

Baidu, ranked 6th by Alexa’s global rankings, is the most popular Chinese search engine. It provides simple and reliable search experience, strong in Chinese language along with multimedia content including MP3 music, videos and movie files. Established in 2000, Baidu provides over 740 million web pages, 80 million images, and 10 million multimedia files. Woah! No wonder the Chinese are making rapid progress. ;)
I came across an interesting fact about this site. One of the founders of this site, namely Robin Li, talks about coining the name for this site. He says:

“Many people have asked about the meaning of our name. 'Baidu' was inspired by a poem written more than 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The poem compares the search for a retreating beauty amid chaotic glamour with the search for one's dream while confronted by life's many obstacles. '...hundreds and thousands of times, for her I searched in chaos, suddenly, I turned by chance, to where the lights were waning, and there she stood.' Baidu, whose literal meaning is hundreds of times, represents persistent search for the ideal.”

Hmm.. you’ve certainly put quite a lot of thought there Mr. Li! =p

7- WIKIPEDIA

 

How can we forget Wikipedia? Ranked number 7th by Alexa, this free web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia has been online since 2001 and has become the largest and most popular general reference work having available on the internet 365 million readers. The site is equally famous among students and people belonging to all types of professions because of its wide ranging articles on any and every subject.

 

 

8- WINDOWS LIVE

Ranked 8th by Alexa’s global traffic ranking, this search engine from Microsoft also called bing has been online for more than sixteen years. It is a collection of services and software products provided by Microsoft. Most of these services are web applications such as chatting, e-mailing, games (particularly multiplayer gaming is an important feature of its applications), news and other fun things. There are three ways in which Windows Live services are offered: Windows Live Essentials applications, web services, and mobile services.

9- TWITTER

Twitter is the ninth most popular site in the world according to Alex’a global rankings. Twitter offers a social networking and micro blogging service, along with instant messaging (tweeting). Established in 2006, twitter had gained popularity since then and is estimated to have 200 million users worldwide. Twitter simply allows their users to discover what’s interesting to them and interact with others who share that interest. You’re always linked to your friends through this site and can get the latest news on entertainment, fashion, movies etc.

10- QQ.COM

China’s most popular free instant messaging program QQ has been ranked 10th by Alexa’s traffic rankings. Its users amount to 636.6 million, making it the world’s largest community online. The program is owned by Ten-cent Holdings Ltd. Since its launching in February 1999, QQ has quickly emerged as a modern cultural phenomenon in China. Besides its cat program, QQ has developed many sub-features as well such as gaming, virtual pets, ringtone downloads, blogging etc.
